Microneedling sounds intense: a device gliding over your face making thousands of micro-channels. So does it hurt? With proper numbing, most clients describe it as a light sandpaper vibration, a 2 or 3 out of 10, and some genuinely find it relaxing.
What the appointment feels like
- Numbing (20 to 30 minutes): a topical anesthetic goes on first. This is what makes the treatment comfortable.
- Treatment (about 30 minutes): pressure and vibration more than pain. Bony areas like the forehead and jawline are the most noticeable.
- Right after: your skin looks and feels like a mild sunburn. That warmth fades within a few hours.
Recovery is shorter than people expect
Redness settles within 24 to 48 hours for most skin. Light flaking around day 3 is normal. Most clients treat on a Thursday or Friday and are back to makeup by Monday.
Why people do it anyway
Those micro-channels trigger collagen production, which is why microneedling shows up in every conversation about acne scars, fine lines, pore size, and overall texture. Results build over a series, most plans are 3 sessions spaced about a month apart.
What microneedling costs
Nationally, sessions run about $200 to $700 depending on the device, the operator's credentials, and whether growth factors or exosomes are added. Medical settings cost more than spa settings for a reason: depth settings that actually reach collagen-producing skin require medical oversight.
As always, this is general education rather than medical advice. If you want to know whether microneedling fits your skin goals, our medical estheticians offer free discovery consults at our Beaver, PA clinic.
